When used by many expatriates, the name Canggu generally means the coastal strip from Berawa in the south, right the way through to Seseh/Cemagi, though it’s technically just the name of a small fishing village to the north west of Berawa.

Both Canggu and the next coastal area to the north, Seseh/Cemagi, offer some of the most pleasing rural landscapes in south west Bali, as it is crisscrossed by small rivers, has numerous hills and gullies, and many stands of mature trees. What’s more, rice is still actively cultivated throughout the district so there are constant reminders of the real rural Bali.

There are many wild beaches right along this stretch of coast, largely deserted except for surfers. Currents can be strong and unpredictable and swimming is confined to certain beaches only. One area that offers safer swimming is Seseh/Cemagi where a reef protects the beach.

The Canggu and Seseh/Cemagi coast has become the address of choice for many expatriates, for it conjures up an image of unspoiled beaches and endless rice fields – the “real” Bali as opposed to more urban areas.

However the reality is that it has undergone substantial development over the last several years and is now home to many luxurious villas, boutique hotels such as Hotel Tugu, and other businesses. Scattered along the shore are quite a number of multi-million dollar homes.
